Farnborough Under 11's
Welcome to a new season of rugby at Farnborough RFC with the Under 11's
squad. This squad is for players who are under 11 years of age as at 1
September 2008. Our season runs from the first Sunday in September
through to the last Sunday in April. Under 11's play full contact
12-a-side rugby (moving up from 9-a-side at U10).
The main changes for this season are that the introduction of 3 extra
players in a team and the introduction of kicking both in open play and
for conversion attempts following the scoring of a try. The three
additional players are used to introduce a fullback and to add a second
row to the scrum which is now a 5-man scrum. The basic team line-up
comprises of 5 forwards and 7 backs.
Training will focus on both ball handling and distribution skills
(running, passing) and contact skills (tackling, rucking, mauling) as
well as the set piece plays. Positional play is now more important and
the concept of forwards and backs as distinct units becomes key.
The introduction of kicking will be key this season. Games restart with
a drop kick and conversions follow a try but players may also kick from
hand during the game. Learning when and when not to kick the ball, as
well as how to kick it, will be an important skill to gain this season.
Training is scheduled to be from 10:00 to 12:00 on Sunday mornings at
Farnborough rugby club. We look forward to seeing you there. We award a
Player of the Week trophy to the team member that performs best at
training and matches during the season. Effort and attitude as well as
end result are equally rewarded.
Please remember to bring the appropriate equipment and clothing.
Gumshields are mandatory and boots (with proper rugby studs) should be
worn (unless the ground is very hard when trainers may be appropriate).
